Friendship Over Fortune: New Study Reveals True Wealth Markers
Friendship Over Fortune: Study Reveals True Wealth Markers

A new UK study has found that strong friendships, good health, and daily moments of happiness are now considered more important markers of financial success and wellbeing than a six-figure salary or luxury car. The research, conducted by Haribo, surveyed Britons to determine what truly makes them feel wealthy in life.

Friendships and Health Top the List

According to the study, having a best mate you trust with your life, a partner who is your closest confidant, and Sunday nights without dread are key indicators of a rich life. Making others laugh, providing a pet with a happy home, and having teenagers who enjoy your company also rank high. Over two-thirds of respondents believe life's little pleasures matter more than riches or social media fame.

While taking an annual holiday and dining out twice weekly were seen as symbols of success, they were easily beaten by showing compassion, maintaining good health, and surrounding yourself with supportive people. Nearly nine out of ten Brits already consider themselves rich in life.

Evolving Definition of Success

More than half (57%) of Brits agree that the definition of a rich and successful life has evolved over the past two decades, becoming less about bank balances. Small gestures, like a word of encouragement, can turn around 70% of people's moods. Half say a simple smile or friendly hello during their commute makes life feel richer.

Philip Murphy, Chief Marketing Officer and MD at HARIBO, said: "Success means different things to different people, but our research shows that having people to cheer you on and celebrate everyday wins, no matter how small, is what helps people feel fulfilled."

Top Signs You're Truly Rich in Life

The study identified 25 signs of true wealth, including: showing kindness to others, being in good health, admitting mistakes, having supportive friends, applauding others' successes without envy, not needing to win every argument, not relying on social media likes for validation, ensuring children feel secure, being comfortable in your own skin, being yourself around loved ones, having children who share their day, a close-knit circle of friends, a partner who is your best friend, having some savings, making people laugh, a trustworthy best mate, a happy pet, sound sleep most nights, someone to call at 2am in an emergency, taking at least one holiday annually, not dreading Sunday evenings, a healthy diet, teenagers who enjoy your company, seldom comparing yourself to others, and waking up eager for the day ahead.
