A journalist has discovered that soda crystals, costing just £1.69 per bag at Savers, outperform bleach on tough household grime. Nicola Roy tested the natural cleaner on her oven glass, toilet bowl, and shower screen, achieving spotless results with minimal effort.
Oven Glass Transformed with Soda Crystal Paste
Roy made a thick paste by mixing soda crystals with water and applied it generously to the oven glass. After leaving it for an hour, she scrubbed with a coarse cloth in circular motions. 'I was genuinely taken aback by how much of the muck lifted away instantly with minimal effort,' she said. The glass looked 'as good as new' after rinsing and a final spritz of surface cleaner.
Toilet Limescale Eliminated Without Harsh Chemicals
For the toilet, Roy poured a couple of cups of soda crystals into the bowl and around the rim, leaving it for another hour. She used an old toothbrush to scrub stubborn stains before flushing. 'The outcome was a spotlessly clean toilet bowl, achieved without a single harsh chemical,' she noted.
Shower Glass Left Gleaming
Applying the same paste method to her shower glass, Roy spread the mixture with a cloth, waited an hour, then scrubbed and wiped clean. 'Every last soap mark and watermark disappeared, leaving behind a stunning shine that's usually quite difficult to accomplish,' she wrote. The results were clear in before-and-after images.
Soda crystals, available for £1.69 at Savers, offer a budget-friendly, non-toxic alternative to bleach for tackling limescale, soap scum, and baked-on grime.
