A significant security breach at Sony has reportedly exposed crucial PlayStation 5 ROM Keys, potentially paving the way for console jailbreaking. The leak, which occurred in the final hours of 2025, has given modders access to hardware-level keys that cannot be patched.
According to TheCyberSpecGuru, the ROM Keys are the first data the PS5 reads at boot and are baked into the hardware. This allows modders to reverse engineer the console's handshake checks, enabling custom software and potentially piracy. However, only existing hardware units are vulnerable; Sony would need to change the keys on new units to prevent future exploits.
The leak could also boost PC emulation, particularly for titles like Bloodborne, by allowing more accurate recreation of the PS5's CPU and GPU communication. However, jailbreaking carries risks, including permanent bans from PSN and increased online cheating.
Sony has not commented publicly, but a full list of keys is reportedly hosted on PSDevWiki, suggesting the leak is genuine. Modders will need time to reverse engineer the boot chain before jailbreak methods become widely available.
