Mass Protests Erupt Over Luxury Development in Zvërnec
For more than a month, thousands of Albanians have taken to the streets of Tirana in the largest outbreak of unrest since the collapse of communism. The protests, dubbed the flamingo revolution, began over environmental concerns about a proposed luxury tourism development in the Zvërnec nature reserve, which hosts over 2,500 species. The development is backed by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, sparking fury over lack of transparency.
Government Response and Prime Minister's Stance
Prime Minister Edi Rama, who won a fourth term last year with a 45% turnout, has insisted the investment will continue as long as he is in power. He blames anti-Trump sentiment for the backlash. Critics accuse him of bulldozer democracy and selling out national interests for foreign wealth. The government claims deals are not finalized, but videos of bulldozers on beaches triggered the protests.
Broader Discontent with Political Leadership
The movement reflects disenchantment with both Rama's government and opposition leader Sali Berisha, a former president banned from the US under the Biden administration for alleged corruption. A 2024 law amendment allows construction in nature reserves for five-star developments, which many see as evidence of ordinary people being sold out for the super-rich. One older protester told the Guardian: "It's been more than 30 years and still our hospitals are terrible, our education system is shit, there are no jobs and everyone is leaving … We've learned from experience that similar projects only ever benefit a wealthy few."
Youth and International Support
Young, educated Albanians have flown back from abroad to join the protests, a striking development for a country with high emigration. MEPs have called for an immediate halt to construction in fragile areas, warning that the project jeopardizes Albania's EU accession plans. Rama has promised EU membership by 2030, but the protests demand a better course than short-term growth that enriches the few via opaque deals.
