Crisps and frozen chips have particularly fallen out of favour, as an estimated 2.5 million people across the country are now using these pharmaceutical aids to manage their weight.

In response to shifting consumer preferences, many traditional fish and chip shops are adapting by offering smaller portion sizes to align with reduced demand. He remarked, 'There's a reasonable percentage of the population on weight suppressant drugs, and they are obviously cutting their carbohydrate intake.' This downturn comes at a difficult time for farmers, who are already contending with surplus stocks from abundant harvests, leading to a significant fall in prices.
Price Plunge and Market Data
According to industry reports from Potato Call, the price of Maris Piper potatoes has halved, currently selling at approximately £180 per ton compared to last year's figures. This price collapse exacerbates the financial strain on agricultural producers, who must navigate both reduced sales volumes and lower revenue per unit.
European Context and Surplus Management
The issue of potato oversupply is not confined to the United Kingdom. In Germany, farmers have been distributing large sacks of excess potatoes at collection points following a bumper harvest, an event dubbed the 'Kartoffel-Flut' or potato flood. Local resident Astrid Marz, who visited one of the 174 distribution sites in Berlin, commented, 'I stopped counting at 150. I think I've got enough to keep me and my neighbours going until the end of the year.' Additionally, surplus potatoes have been sent to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, highlighting the global scale of the agricultural surplus.
