Daring Cave Rescue: How Cavers Saved a Sheep Trapped in a 90ft Fissure
Cavers rescue sheep from 90ft fissure

In an extraordinary display of bravery and teamwork, a group of cavers embarked on a daring rescue mission to save a sheep that had fallen into a 90ft-deep fissure in the Yorkshire Dales.

The incident occurred when the unfortunate animal strayed too close to the edge of the rocky crevice, losing its footing and plummeting into the darkness below. Local farmers, unable to reach the stranded sheep themselves, called upon the expertise of the Cave Rescue Organisation (CRO).

The Descent into Darkness

Equipped with ropes, harnesses, and headlamps, the experienced cavers carefully lowered themselves into the narrow fissure. The operation required precision and patience, as the team navigated the treacherous terrain to reach the frightened animal.

"It was a challenging descent," explained one of the rescuers. "The fissure was extremely narrow in places, and we had to ensure both our safety and the sheep's well-being throughout the operation."

A Woolly Miracle

After reaching the sheep, the rescuers carefully secured the animal in a special harness before beginning the painstaking ascent. The entire operation took several hours, with the team working tirelessly to bring the sheep back to the surface unharmed.

"The sheep was remarkably calm considering its ordeal," noted a CRO spokesperson. "We're just relieved we could help and that the story had a happy ending."

Local farmers have expressed their gratitude to the rescue team, whose quick response and specialist skills prevented what could have been a tragic outcome for the stranded animal.
