He explained that while most garden and household waste can be composted, items like potatoes decompose slowly and can attract rats. He recommends using a recipe of ingredients that break down quickly to deter pests.
Another practical measure is placing chicken wire underneath your compost heap to prevent rats from accessing it. Regularly turning the compost can also help, though gardeners should be mindful that other wildlife may use the heap.
Rats cannot survive without water, so removing water sources is crucial. This includes fixing dripping taps, securing drains, and adding baffles to drainpipes. For serious infestations, Monty advises contacting your local council or a professional pest controller.
