Wayne Rooney issued a scathing verdict on Thomas Tuchel's management after England's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semi-final, accusing the German coach of repeating Gareth Southgate's mistakes. Speaking on BBC One, Rooney described England's performance as a "real panic" and criticized Tuchel's decision to substitute Anthony Gordon for defender Ezri Konsa in the 72nd minute after taking the lead.
Rooney's Verdict on Tuchel's Tactics
"It's a panic, it's a real panic," Rooney said. "You can't go a goal up and then surrender, surrender the ball and surrender any opportunity of trying to get the second goal. You want to be on the front foot when the pressure is on Argentina to get back in the game." He added that players would "lose belief" seeing defensive changes from the manager, echoing his earlier criticism of Southgate at Euro 2024.
Familiar Heartbreak for England
England's exit followed a pattern seen in previous tournaments—Croatia, Italy, Spain, and now Argentina. A "hold what we have" mentality, late substitutions inviting pressure, and a formation change that failed to keep the opposition out. Tuchel, hired in January 2025 on an 18-month deal to win the World Cup, faced intense scrutiny after the loss. Both Argentina goals came after England switched to a five-man defense, with Enzo Fernandez's long-range strike and Lautaro Martinez's stoppage-time header sealing the comeback.
Tuchel's Own Words Come Back to Haunt Him
Chris Sutton labeled the defeat a "coaching catastrophe" on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating: "The fact that England get themselves in front and then basically hand Argentina the initiative, defending deep and another defender on. It's quite a simple game football, you have to get up the pitch. You can't expect to defend for 30 minutes against the quality Argentina had." Tuchel had previously criticized Southgate's tactics at Euro 2024, saying England were "more afraid to drop out of the tournament than having the excitement and hunger to win it."
What Next for England?
Tuchel's contract was extended earlier in 2026, but the FA now faces a decision: keep faith or change course before a home tournament England are likely to qualify for. The inquest into another semifinal defeat will be brutal, with Rooney's comments adding to the pressure on the German manager.
