Thomas Tuchel has confirmed he has no intention of stepping down as England head coach following the Three Lions' World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
In the aftermath of the loss, where Tuchel faced heavy criticism for his second-half substitutions, speculation about his future intensified. Bookmakers BetVictor installed former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as the favourite to become the next England manager if Tuchel's reign ended early.
Tuchel Commits to Home Euros
However, Tuchel made it clear he will still be in charge for the European Championships co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland in 2028. "We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros," Tuchel said in his post-match press conference. "I'm looking forward to that even though right now it's difficult to look that far ahead."
FA Backing Despite Defeat
The Football Association (FA) is expected to keep faith with the German tactician despite the Argentina loss. A thrilling, historic win over Mexico at the Azteca, followed by an extra-time victory against Norway, is understood to have secured Tuchel's job regardless of the semi-final outcome. England's challenging route through the tournament means Tuchel is not expected to face immediate pressure.
Tuchel has already agreed a contract extension through to Euro 2028, and the FA's intention remains for him to lead England into that tournament unless there is a major collapse. His deal includes performance-related clauses that could reduce compensation if targets are not met. Although Tuchel was appointed with the clear objective of delivering England's first World Cup since 1966, the FA is not expected to base its assessment solely on results.
