Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham has expressed his heartbreak after England were eliminated from the World Cup by Argentina in the semi-finals. The Three Lions took an early second-half lead through Anthony Gordon but could not hold on, eventually losing 2-1 after goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez.
Bullingham's Statement
In a statement released after the match, Bullingham said: "It is heartbreaking to be so close. The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament. I would like to thank them all - and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home. We felt your support every step of the way and we are all so disappointed not to go further."
Bullingham has been FA CEO since 2019 and led the recruitment of Thomas Tuchel as Gareth Southgate's successor. Tuchel faced criticism for his tactics against Argentina, but said after the match he will lead the team into the 2028 Euros.
Match Details
England came into the semi-final aiming to reach their first World Cup final since 1966. The match was a cagey affair until Gordon broke the deadlock early in the second half. England then sat back, allowing Argentina to dominate possession and eventually score two late goals after laying siege to Jordan Pickford's goal for almost 40 minutes.
Despite the disappointment, England's campaign is not over. They will face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday in Miami.
