Why I Couldn't Finish Netflix's Most Disturbing Crime Series

True crime fans have an abundance of programmes and films to choose from, but one series stands out as particularly hard to stomach. Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, first released in 2022, dramatises the life of serial cannibal and murderer Jeffrey Dahmer. Despite its critical acclaim, the graphic content proved too much for one viewer.

The series, created by Ryan Murphy, does not shy away from the most chilling aspects of Dahmer's crimes. Watching in broad daylight, the viewer found themselves closing their eyes during many scenes. Episode four, which features a scene involving a decapitated head, was the final straw, prompting them to turn it off entirely.

Viewers have shared mixed reactions online. One IMDb user called it a 'red flag for highly sensitive people', noting they couldn't sleep after watching. On Rotten Tomatoes, a reviewer described it as 'so disturbing' but 'well put together'. Another praised Evan Peters' performance as 'absolutely terrifying, raw, bone-chilling, and perfect'.

The Monster anthology also includes Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Despite the disturbing content, the series has broken records and won awards. The viewer plans to give it another go, but only with someone else present and not at night.
