Molly Windsor, who plays Rosie in Netflix's hit drama Unchosen, has revealed the emotional and physical toll of filming the series' climactic scenes. The show, currently the most-watched on Netflix in the UK, follows Rosie as she escapes a religious cult and confronts her husband Adam (Asa Butterfield) and lover Sam (Fra Fee).
In the finale, Rosie confesses her affair with Sam, an 'unchosen' outsider, and reveals that Sam killed cult leader Mr Phillips. Adam, who has also been unfaithful with the same man, agrees to help Rosie and their daughter Grace escape. However, their plans are thwarted when Sam pursues them through the woods and attempts to drown Rosie in a trough.
Windsor described the drowning scene as 'absolutely exhausting', noting that she and a stunt double tag-teamed the underwater shots. Despite the physical shock, she felt safe throughout. 'You rationalise it – you know that you're safe and that the team's looking after you,' she said. 'But it does put your body into a little bit of shock.'
Reflecting on Rosie's attraction to Sam, Windsor explained that her sheltered upbringing made her vulnerable. 'She's had such a sheltered life – they don't interact with people outside of the community,' she said. 'Sam presents as someone that is different; there's an intrigue and a curiosity.' Rosie's moral compass drives her actions, but she remains unaware of Adam's secret until the end.
Windsor emphasised that the show avoids simple good-versus-evil narratives. 'People are complicated. It's not a black and white case of good and evil. Everyone's a mix of both,' she said, noting that Adam's forced suppression of his sexuality offers insight into his vulnerabilities without excusing his actions.
