The Duffer brothers have officially concluded Stranger Things with an emotional two-hour finale that saw the Hawkins crew defeat Vecna and destroy the Upside Down. In a subtle narrative twist, the finale hints at the fate of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), who appears to sacrifice herself as the portal collapses.
Earlier in the episode, Eleven seems to vanish with the Upside Down, but in the final moments, Mike (Finn Wolfhard) shares a theory with his friends. He suggests that Eleven may have survived, using her powers to escape with the help of her sister, Kali (Linnea Berthelsen). The episode flashes back to show Kali using her illusion powers to make everyone believe Eleven is inside the gate, allowing Eleven to slip away and start a peaceful life off the grid.
The Duffers explained that this ending provides a coping mechanism for both the characters and the audience. In an interview, Ross Duffer described watching the finale with fans and the cast as an emotional experience, noting that many were in tears but proud of the series' conclusion.
The finale also includes a 40-minute epilogue that ties up the characters' stories, with Mike closing the door on his childhood as Holly and her friends begin a new D&D campaign. The Duffers have left a spinoff hint, though details remain under wraps.
