Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first official glimpse of Sophie Turner as the legendary Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider television adaptation. The highly anticipated series, currently in production, is set to premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
First Look at the New Tomb Raider
On Thursday, the studio's official Instagram account shared a striking first-look photograph of the 29-year-old actress fully embodying the video game icon. In the image, Turner channels Croft's signature adventurer aesthetic, wearing black shorts and a green tank top. The look is completed with a leather backpack, aviator sunglasses, and the character's famous braided ponytail.
The caption accompanying the post teased fans, stating: 'Get your artifacts out. Lara's on her way.' This marks Turner as the latest actress to step into the role, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, who starred in two feature films, and Alicia Vikander, who led a 2018 reboot.
A Year of Intense Preparation
Speaking to ScreenRant recently, Sophie Turner revealed the extensive physical training she has undertaken for the demanding role. 'I've been training for a long time now, coming up on a year,' she disclosed, noting her preparation began in February 2025. Filming for the series is scheduled to commence this January.
'I'm really excited, but I feel prepped,' Turner added. 'I'm excited for the world to see what we do with Lara and Tomb Raider. I think it's going to be something special.'
Plot and Premiere Details
The series offers a fresh narrative take on the classic franchise. Turner will portray Zara, an ordinary office worker at the pension fund investment firm Lochmill Capital. Her mundane life is violently upended when an armed gang seizes her office, forcing her and her best friend Luke to help them steal billions of pounds from public pensions.
The six-episode season will be directed by acclaimed filmmakers Sam Miller (I May Destroy You) and Hettie Macdonald (Normal People). The cast also features seasoned actors Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs. All episodes will debut on January 21 for streaming on Amazon Prime.
In a recent interview with PORTER, Sophie Turner reflected on entering her thirties, expressing a desire for peace after a 'hectic' decade. She also touched on balancing motherhood—she shares two young daughters with ex-husband Joe Jonas—with her career, and briefly addressed her personal life, noting she hasn't been on a date 'in weeks' following rumours of a short-lived connection with musician Chris Martin.
