Production Details and Creative Team
The six-episode series follows the classic SNL format with British adaptations: opening monologue, topical sketches, live music performances, and a UK version of the satirical Weekend Update news segment. Each episode is scripted, rehearsed, and performed within a week before a live studio audience, with the iconic introduction "Live from London, it's Saturday Night."
Behind the scenes, the writing team includes Charlie Skelton (8 Out of 10 Cats), Al Roberts (Stath Lets Flats), and Bella Hull (Have I Got News For You). Lead producer James Longman emphasized the cast represents "the freshest voices we have" with "incredible chemistry."
Cast Reactions and Historical Context
Cast members expressed excitement about joining the comedy institution. Animashaun called it a "privilege," noting "It would've been weird to have said no." Magliano described the opportunity as "incredibly cool," adding "the chance to work collaboratively with other amazing comedians was a huge draw."
Phil Edgar Jones, Sky's executive director of Unscripted Originals, highlighted the timing: "We all need a laugh like never before." He acknowledged the show launches "50 short years after it first launched in the US" with support from original producer Lorne Michaels.
This adaptation follows Britain's unrelated Saturday Live program that aired on Channel 4 in the 1980s, featuring talents like Harry Enfield and Stephen Fry. The new SNL UK represents an official partnership with the American franchise, promising to continue its legacy of discovering and nurturing comedy talent for British audiences.
