Malia Obama's LA Lunch in Autumnal Style Follows Michelle's Hair Talk
Malia Obama's Chic Outing After Michelle's Beauty Standards Talk

Malia Obama, the 27-year-old daughter of former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, was spotted enjoying a stylish lunch with a friend in Los Angeles over the weekend, showcasing a perfectly curated autumnal look.

A Fashionable Outing in Los Angeles

The young filmmaker demonstrated her eye for style during her Sunday outing. She wore a mini denim dungaree dress layered over a thick, striped grey sweater, creating a cozy yet chic ensemble perfectly suited to the season.

Malia complemented her outfit with cardamon-coloured tights, burgundy boots, and a multi-coloured tote bag draped casually over her shoulder. Her appearance exemplified effortless autumn fashion while maintaining comfort during her casual lunch meeting.

Michelle Obama's Powerful Message on Beauty Standards

Malia's Los Angeles outing came just two days after her mother, Michelle Obama, delivered a candid speech about beauty standards affecting Black women. During a live conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, tied to the release of her new book 'The Light We Carry', Michelle addressed the pressures Black women face regarding their hair.

'Let me explain something to white people,' Michelle stated during the Friday event. 'Our hair comes out of our head naturally in a curly pattern. When we straighten it to follow your beauty standards, we are trapped by the straightness.'

She emphasised how these standards limit Black women's activities, noting that many avoid swimming or going to the gym to maintain straightened hair. 'It's exhausting, expensive and takes up so much time,' she concluded, urging people to 'get out of their hair' and reconsider these expectations.

Malia's Growing Film Career

While maintaining a relatively low profile since her family left the White House in 2017, Malia has been building an impressive career in filmmaking. Last year, she debuted her short film 'The Heart' at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, where she notably credited herself as Malia Ann rather than using the Obama family name.

In her 'Meet the Artist' video for the festival, Malia described her film as being 'about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret,' adding that it 'works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things.'

Her path to filmmaking began early, with internships on Halle Berry's CBS sci-fi series 'Extant' at age 15 and on HBO's 'Girls' at 17. She later worked as a staff writer on Donald Glover's Amazon Prime series 'Swarm', with Glover telling Vanity Fair in 2022 that she's 'an amazingly talented person' with a great writing style.

Both Malia and her younger sister Sasha, 24, have pursued higher education before launching their careers - Malia attended Harvard University while Sasha studied at the University of Michigan. The sisters have largely maintained their privacy while establishing themselves in their respective fields.
