Beloved Gogglebox stars Sue and Steve Sheehan have delighted fans by sharing a nostalgic throwback photograph from the 1980s, appearing completely unrecognisable from their current television personas. The charming snapshot offers a rare glimpse into the couple's early years together.
A Blast From The Past
The South London couple, who have become fan favourites on the hit Channel 4 show since joining in 2019, posted the vintage image on Instagram last month. In the sweet photograph capturing a date night from decades past, Sue looked strikingly different in a stylish purple dress featuring an elegant draped neckline.
Her signature red locks were styled in a voluminous blowout that perfectly captured the era's fashion. Meanwhile, Steve cut a dapper figure in a sophisticated black double-breasted blazer, complete with a polka-dot tie and crisp white shirt.
The couple, both in their 60s, have been married for nearly 47 years and are devoted parents to two daughters alongside being proud grandparents to their grandson, Roman.
Overcoming Health Challenges
Earlier in 2024, Sue took a temporary break from Gogglebox, later courageously revealing her diagnosis of Bell's palsy. This condition causes temporary weakness or paralysis in the facial muscles on one side of the face.
When the couple returned to the show in December after their absence, Sue openly discussed the challenges she faced following her diagnosis. "I've had to relearn to do a couple of things since this Bell's palsy," she explained during the episode.
"One is to speak through the side of my mouth, and the other one is chewing. Chewing takes a long time."
Steve offered his characteristic humour and support, joking: "I have offered to chew your food for you, but you declined." He then affectionately added: "I've gotta say, you haven't lost the sharp side of your tongue though, have you?"
To which Sue quickly responded: "No, it's sharper than ever, actually."
Fan Support and Awareness
Viewers quickly took to social media to express their support for Sue, with many praising her bravery in discussing her condition publicly. Fans flooded X, formerly Twitter, with well-wishes and appreciation for raising awareness about Bell's palsy.
One supporter wrote: "Fair play to Sue on #gogglebox for appearing with Bell's palsy. Raising awareness can only be good."
Another added: "Sending love to Sue. Hope her Bell's palsy clears soon," while others described the couple as "one of my favourites on #gogglebox."
Throughout their time on television, Steve, a former black cab driver, and Sue, who is semi-retired, have kept audiences entertained with their witty commentary on weekly television highlights. They also regularly update their 6,000 Instagram followers about their daily lives and adventures.
Gogglebox continues to air Fridays on Channel 4, with all episodes available to stream on demand for those who miss the broadcast.
