Ryan Reynolds 'Completely Gutted' After Wrexham Miss Play-Offs

Ryan Reynolds has described himself as “completely gutted” after Wrexham missed out on a place in the Championship play-offs on the final day of the regular season. The Hollywood actor, who co-owns the Welsh club with Rob McElhenney, took to social media to share his disappointment following a 2-2 draw at home to Middlesbrough.

Final Day Drama

Wrexham needed a win to have any chance of securing a top-six finish, but they could only manage a point against Middlesbrough at the Racecourse Ground. The result meant they finished seventh in the table, two points behind sixth-placed Hull City, who claimed the final play-off spot.

The match saw Middlesbrough take the lead through Tommy Conway, but Wrexham equalised through Josh Windass. Sam Smith then put the hosts ahead just before half-time, only for David Strelec to level the scores for Boro in the second half.

Reynolds' Reaction

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Reynolds wrote: “I am completely gutted by today’s result but incredibly proud of our season. We’ve come a long way in five years and this was the best result in our 150+ year history. More to do. But for now, we have so much to be proud of, Reds.”

The draw marked the first time since Reynolds and McElhenney’s second season as owners that Wrexham have failed to secure promotion. The duo took over the club in February 2021 when Wrexham were in the National League. After finishing eighth in their first full season, they lost in the play-offs the following year. Since then, they have achieved three consecutive promotions, climbing from the National League to the Championship.

Looking Ahead

Wrexham will now prepare for another promotion push in the Championship next season. Their pre-season schedule includes friendlies against Liverpool, Leeds United, and Sunderland in the United States. Reynolds and McElhenney will be hoping to build on this season's progress and mount a stronger challenge for promotion to the Premier League.
