Hollywood legend Eddie Murphy has unveiled one of the most surprising encounters from his early career in his revealing new Netflix documentary, Being Eddie. The 64-year-old comedian shared a remarkable story about screen icon Yul Brynner approaching him with an unexpected proposition during his 21st birthday celebrations at New York's legendary Studio 54 nightclub.
The Studio 54 Proposition
Murphy recalled the extraordinary moment when Brynner, accompanied by a woman he believed to be his wife, made him a startling offer. "My 21st birthday party I had at Studio 54," Murphy remembered. "Yul Brynner, Ten Commandments, he was with his wife and he was like, 'How would you like to go back to my apartment with my wife and I and party?' And I was like, 'Nah, I'm cool!'"
The Beverly Hills Cop star admitted that the true nature of the invitation only dawned on him years later. "I realized as I got older, his wife was smiling. Did he want me to go f**k his wife?" Murphy speculated about the Oscar-winning actor's intentions.
From Wild Star to Family Man
The documentary also explores Murphy's dramatic personal transformation from a self-focused young celebrity to a dedicated family man. The actor now has ten children with different partners and credits fatherhood with completely changing his perspective on life.
"My kids are the center of everything," Murphy revealed. "Before kids it's just about you, once you have kids it's all about them. I used to stay up two days sometimes before going to bed. When I met [second wife Paige Butcher], I got more on her schedule, and now we watch two episodes of Seinfeld and go to bed."
Healing Family Relationships
Murphy's documentary touches on his complicated family history, including his once-contentious relationship with Spice Girl Mel B. The former couple shares 18-year-old Angel, who is living as a trans man, and endured a painful paternity dispute that led to years of estrangement.
However, Mel B recently confirmed that their co-parenting relationship has dramatically improved. "[Angel and Eddie] spend time together, they go on holiday together. He has ten kids, he's a proper father," she told Us Weekly. The singer added that Murphy has since apologised for questioning their son's paternity publicly.
Murphy's family includes children ranging in age from 23 to 35, with his youngest two, Izzy and Max, shared with current wife Paige Butcher. The documentary portrays how the comedian's wild party days have been replaced by domestic stability and family focus, marking a significant evolution from the young man who celebrated his 21st birthday at Studio 54 over four decades ago.
