The highly anticipated Yellowstone spin-off Dutton Ranch has suffered a significant setback before even airing its first episode. Creator, executive producer, and showrunner Chad Feehan has departed the series ahead of its premiere on Paramount+.
Feehan's Exit and Season 2 Uncertainty
It remains unclear whether Feehan will be replaced should the spin-off be renewed for a second season. The news was first reported by Variety, which confirmed that Feehan will not return as showrunner if the series gets a Season 2 renewal.
Given Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan's successful track record at Paramount+, such a renewal seems highly likely, but fans are already expressing concern.
What to Expect from Dutton Ranch
The spin-off stars Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, following the couple as they "collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire." Set in South Texas, the show promises that "blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting, and the cost of survival might just be your soul."
Returning alongside Reilly and Hauser is Finn Little, who plays Beth's adopted son Carter in the flagship series. New cast members include Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Alyn Lind. Country singer Morgan Wade also joined the series in a recurring role, announced earlier in April.
Premiere Details
The nine-episode first season premieres on Paramount+ on May 15 with two episodes, and will also air on Paramount Network. Production began in August 2025 in Ferris, Texas.
Fan Reactions
Fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts on Feehan's departure. One wrote: "Dutton Ranch already losing its showrunner. Season 2 in trouble already?" Another added: "This is going to be awful." A third commented: "Hollywood always implodes right before launch."
Feehan has not yet spoken publicly about his reasons for leaving the series.
