Cooper & Fry: New Channel 5 Detective Drama Airs

Television audiences are in for a treat as Channel 5 prepares to launch its brand new detective drama, Cooper and Fry, next week. The series, which promises to deliver a fresh take on the police procedural, is based on the acclaimed and best-selling novels by Stephen Booth.

Star-Studded Cast Brings Literary Duo to Life

Heading the cast are two familiar faces from British television. Robert James-Collier, well-known for his roles in Coronation Street and Downton Abbey, steps into the shoes of DC Ben Cooper, an amiable local detective. Opposite him, Doctor Who star Mandip Gill portrays the more reserved DC Diane Fry, a newcomer to the area.

James-Collier expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the excitement of launching a new detective series. He also praised his co-star, mentioning their previous positive experiences and the fun they had working together. Gill echoed this sentiment, revealing that the unique folklore element of the stories initially attracted her, and a successful chemistry read with James-Collier sealed the deal.

A Atmospheric Setting and Compelling Cases

The drama is set against the brooding and beautiful backdrop of the Peak District, in the fictional town of Edendale. Interestingly, despite its English setting, the series was actually filmed on location in Ireland.

The series will launch on Tuesday, November 18 at 8pm on Channel 5. It will adapt four of Stephen Booth's earlier novels: Black Dog, Dying to Sin, Blind To the Bones, and Dancing with the Virgins.

Mismatched Detectives and Local Legends

The heart of the show lies in the dynamic between the two lead detectives. Cooper, a local who understands the area and its people, is paired with the sceptical Fry. They must navigate their contrasting personalities to solve a string of mysterious deaths.

A key theme of the series is the lingering power of local folklore and old beliefs in the hills. While Fry is dismissive of these shadowy traditions, the detectives find they cannot ignore them as they delve deeper into their unusual cases. As they work together, their personal lives begin to intertwine, forming a unique friendship forged in the face of danger.

Following the announcement on social media, fans of the books and general viewers alike have expressed great excitement. One commenter called the news "sensational," while a fan of the novels simply stated, "I can't believe it. Cooper and Diane IRL. FINALLY."
