BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has announced she will leave the BBC in April, after more than 25 years with the corporation. The 62-year-old has been a familiar face on BBC Breakfast since 2010, delivering daily forecasts to millions of viewers.
Kirkwood joined the BBC Weather Centre in April 1998, after training at The Weather Channel, the Met Office and the BBC. She began broadcasting on the BBC News channel and later became the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast, a role she has held for over a decade.
Beyond her regular forecasts, Kirkwood has reported from major events including Wimbledon, the Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot and royal occasions. She has also contributed to The One Show, taking part in activities such as a tandem parachute jump with the Red Devils and a hang-gliding flight.
In a statement, Kirkwood said: “It’s been an absolute privilege to bring you the weather every day. My job is something I’ve never taken for granted and I’ve loved every minute! This hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but it feels like the right moment to step away.”
Jonathan Munro, Interim CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, praised Kirkwood’s “exceptional” contribution, describing her as setting “the gold standard” for accurate, valued journalism. He added: “She will be greatly missed by teams across the BBC.”
Kirkwood has been honoured multiple times by the Television and Radio Industries Club, where she was repeatedly named Best TV Weather Presenter. In 2015, she competed in Strictly Come Dancing, reaching week eight with professional partner Pasha Kovalev.
