BBC Breakfast presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty opened Thursday's (22 May) programme with the tragic news that two members of staff from the Israeli embassy had been shot dead in Washington D.C.
Stayt announced: "Good morning, it's Thursday, May 22nd. Our main news story, two members of staff from the Israeli embassy have been shot dead in Washington." Munchetty added that a man and woman were shot at close range as they left an event at the Capital Jewish Museum just after 9pm local time.
The presenters then handed over to North America correspondent Nomia Iqbal, who reported from near the museum. She revealed that the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, was seen pacing outside before opening fire, reportedly shouting "free Palestine". The victims, a couple due to be engaged, have not been publicly identified.
US President Donald Trump condemned the attack on Truth Social, calling it "based obviously on antisemitism" and offering condolences. Authorities confirmed a suspect is in custody and there is no active shooter situation.
