Members of the Royal Family are trained from an early age to act as diplomats, meticulously guarding their words in a manner that most ordinary individuals will never comprehend. Now, a team of forensic lip-readers has delved into video footage capturing the royals in more candid moments, unveiling everyday thoughts and emotions previously hidden from public view.
Uncovering Private Royal Exchanges
In a revealing segment from Channel 5's documentary, Lip-Reading the Royals: What Are They Really Saying?, analysts scrutinised a 2016 incident where the Prince and Princess of Wales retraced the late Princess Diana's footsteps outside India's iconic Taj Mahal. As the royal couple strolled near the vast mausoleum in Agra, lip-reading experts claimed that Princess Catherine appeared to remind her husband of how his mother looked in 1992, shortly before the collapse of her marriage.
A Moment of Silence in the Sweltering Heat
Prince William did not seem to acknowledge her words, continuing silently in the intense 41°C (106°F) heat. Royal-watcher Cristo Foufas highlighted the significance of this exchange, noting that the comparison to William's mother, Diana, originated from Catherine herself. "What's interesting about this is that the comparison to William's mother, Diana, actually comes from Princess Catherine, his wife, saying 'Didn't your mother look good?' And when she mentioned that, William doesn't actually acknowledge it," Foufas explained.
He speculated on possible reasons for William's lack of response, suggesting it might be due to media presence or personal pain. "Whether that's because he doesn't want to reference it in front of, of course, the world's media, being there, whether it's too painful, that's something we will never know," Foufas added. He further hypothesised that William might have later explained his silence in private, perhaps saying, "I just didn't want to talk about Mum there because somebody might pick up what you're saying."
Deflecting the Conversation
Foufas emphasised that Prince William is a savvy operator, likely aware that their conversation could be overheard. "He's not silly. So I think there would be a reason for him deflecting the conversation, away from that," he remarked. Instead, the lip-readers suggested that William made a mild complaint about the heat and mentioned he hadn't worn his formal blue sports jacket. When Catherine proposed he remove it, William reportedly responded, "Are you kidding? I don't think anything I wear would cool me down."
Photographic Moments and Public Statements
While William and Catherine paused for a photograph on the so-called "Diana bench" in front of the famed white marble monument, a Kensington Palace spokesman at the time downplayed any special significance. "They made the decision because it is what all visitors to the Taj Mahal do — they sit on the bench with the perfect symmetry of the building behind them," the spokesman stated.
Further Revelations from the Documentary
Elsewhere in the documentary, lip-readers uncovered private flirtatious banter between Catherine and William. During another royal event where William wore full dress uniform, Kate privately told him, "You do look very smart," adding, "you do know how it makes me feel." These insights offer a rare glimpse into the personal dynamics of the royal couple, contrasting with their public personas.
Coverage of William and Kate's visit to India is featured in Episode 4 of Lip-Reading the Royals, which airs at 8pm on Saturday, March 21. This documentary continues to shed light on the nuanced interactions within the Royal Family, revealing moments that might otherwise remain concealed from the public eye.
