Strictly Come Dancing Professionals Axed in Brutal Social Media Shake-Up

BBC executives have reportedly employed a harsh method to determine which professional dancers will remain on Strictly Come Dancing, as the show undergoes what insiders describe as a "blood-bath" of long-standing cast members. According to sources, the decision hinged critically on the number of TikTok followers each dancer possesses, as the programme seeks to move past recent controversies and appeal to a younger demographic.

Social Media Metrics Drive Casting Decisions

As the Strictly "blood-bath" continues, it has been reported that the professionals have been scrutinised over what they bring to the show aside from their dance moves. Karen Hauer has recently joined Gorka Márquez, Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk, and Michelle Tsiakkas on the list of dancers departing the series. A source revealed that this shake-up is all down to social media and marketing, with TikTok popularity playing a pivotal role.

The source explained: "Strictly is always looking for ways to increase its audience in terms of volume, but also in terms of attracting new, young viewers. Social media is a massive part of broadening that appeal, and TikTok is the perfect medium for a show where music and dance is at the forefront. They won’t simply lose someone from the line-up because they aren’t big on TikTok, but it might just be the thing that saves them from exiting the line-up."

Follower Counts Highlight Stark Contrasts

The paper pointed out that the issue is not about age but social media popularity, citing examples such as Nadiya Bychkova and Dianne Buswell, both aged 36. While both are well-respected and high-profile, Nadiya, who is leaving, has only 19,600 TikTok followers compared to Dianne, who is staying with 966,000 followers. Similarly, Karen Hauer has 9,100 followers, whereas Alexis, who joined in 2025, boasts 190,600. Gorka Márquez has 47,000 followers, Michelle Tsiakkas has 13,000, and Luba Mushtuk does not even have an account.

In contrast, Nikita Kuzmin and Jowita Przystal, who are both retaining their positions, have 125,400 and 112,400 followers, respectively. An insider emphasised that bosses recognise the importance of social media, noting that Strictly clips garnered "more than a billion views" across platforms last year. They added that having a "strong presence" is paramount for bringing in a new younger audience and creating a buzz beyond mere statistics.

Broader Changes Extend Beyond Dancers

While BBC bosses work on the biggest shake-up in the show's history, it is not just the dancers who have followed hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly out the door. Strictly spin-off It Takes Two hosts Fleur East and Janette Manrara have also reportedly been axed. Former Strictly professional Janette, 42, took over hosting duties in 2021 after eight years on the main show, while pop star Fleur, 38, joined the line-up in 2023 after reaching the final the year before.

A spokesperson for the BBC told the Mirror: "It is factually incorrect to claim that either has been ‘axed’. Plans for Strictly Come Dancing 2026 will be confirmed in due course." Meanwhile, Strictly favourite Karen Hauer was in tears as she took to Instagram to express her emotions about the show. She said: "Hey everyone, I've got something to tell you. It's a tough one, but here we go. After 14 years on Strictly Come Dancing, I've decided this is the right time for me to close this chapter and take on new projects in other areas that I'm passionate about. Strictly completely changed my life, not only as a performer and a teacher, but as a human being. I've had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people and brilliant celebrity partners who have become close friends and people I admire so much."
