Love Island's little known rule explains why cast members are always missing a key item. Contestants on the ITV2 reality dating series have a number of strict rules to follow while in the villa. You'll never see the Love Island cast carrying a book, as the item is completely banned.
Why Books Are Banned in the Love Island Villa
The Love Island villa provides its residents with a fully-stocked wardrobe, unlimited cosmetics, and countless water bottles, but there's one everyday item that's nowhere to be found. Whether lounging by the pool or relaxing in the shade, contestants often appear restless. While many holidaymakers would seize such quiet moments to read a good book, this simply doesn't happen on the ITV2 reality show. There's a legitimate explanation: books, magazines, and newspapers are forbidden to ensure contestants remain oblivious to any developments beyond the villa's boundaries.
Former Islander Reveals the Rule
Former Islander Camilla Thurlow, who appeared on the show in 2017, recently revealed this lesser-known regulation on Instagram. Camilla, who reached the finale and secured runner-up position alongside Jamie Jewitt on Season 3, responded to a comedy sketch by Alice Etches. The sketch joked about reading in the villa, and Camilla commented, "Sadly you can't take books in, possibly because this would have been my entire Love Island story arc." Fortunately, Camilla eventually married Jamie, so the lack of books didn't hinder her romance.
Impact on 2026 Contestant Sean Fitzgerald
The ban is a blow to 2026 frontrunner Sean Fitzgerald, who cultivated a passion for reading before entering the summer series. Sean, paired with former detective Lola Deal, told OK! magazine he had discovered a "newfound love" for novels. "I'd never read before but I've already read a few books," he said, though he couldn't recall the title of a book he recently finished. He enjoys crime novels and drama stories, comparing them to watching a movie. However, in the villa, contestants only have each other for entertainment, as reading materials are strictly off-limits.
Love Island airs Sundays to Fridays at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
