Jeremy Renner Faces $23,450 Romance Scam Lawsuit from Divorcee

A California woman has filed a lawsuit accusing Hollywood star Jeremy Renner of orchestrating a romance scam that defrauded her of $23,450. Marnie Reeves, 56, claims she was targeted after liking one of Renner's Instagram posts while he was recovering from a snowplow accident in 2023.

Allegations of a Virtual Relationship

Reeves, who recently emerged from a 20-year marriage, alleges she began communicating with someone she believed was Renner through an unverified Instagram account. According to her 549-page complaint filed in December 2024, the interactions quickly turned romantic and sexual in nature.

"I have been mentally sick, and could not eat for a year, lost my hair my dignity and my self worth," Reeves wrote in her legal filing. She claims the relationship developed via WhatsApp messages exchanged daily from April to August 2023.

The Financial Demands Begin

Early in the alleged relationship, Reeves says she received messages from someone named Lasse Larsson, who claimed to be part of Renner's management team. These communications demanded payments for various packages:

  • A "normal" package for $1,100
  • A "VIP Silver Ticket" for $3,850
  • A "VIP Gold Ticket" for $5,789
  • A "VIP Diamond ticket" for $10,888

Reeves initially paid $1,100, hoping to secure video calls with the person she believed was Renner. She claims to have only spoken with him once via Google Chat video, while he was allegedly driving.

Renner's Vehement Denial

Renner's legal team has categorically denied all allegations, stating in court filings: "This case is not about anything Defendant Jeremy Renner did. It is nothing more than frivolous litigation premised entirely on Plaintiff’s self-generated belief that she was in a romantic relationship with Defendant—a belief that has no basis in fact."

The actor's lawyers argue Reeves was victimized by internet scammers using Renner's identity, a problem the actor has publicly warned about on his verified social media accounts. Renner himself posted on Facebook last year: "Be careful. I’ll never ask for money … SCAMMERS want money."

Family Involvement Allegations

Reeves further claims she communicated with someone she believed was Renner's mother, Valerie Cearley, on Instagram. She alleges Cearley provided Renner's personal phone number, saying: "I'm sure he's going to be happy a classmate would like to talk to him."

The Daily Mail has verified that the Instagram account Reeves interacted with no longer exists, and Cearley's actual account appears to be under a different handle. Renner's lawyers have called the inclusion of family members in the lawsuit "irrelevant and outrageous."

Evidence and Investigation Concerns

Reeves submitted numerous emails and text messages as evidence, many containing grammatical errors and referring to her as "madam." She also provided TruthFinder reports suggesting connections between the alleged scammers and Renner's family, though the website itself warns about accuracy limitations.

Renner's legal team dismissed this evidence as "digital fishing" and "a narrative reverse-engineered from online search results." They noted that Renner, with an estimated $80 million net worth, has no financial motive for such a scam.

Legal Proceedings and Future Outlook

The case is scheduled for trial in August 2026, though Renner's attorney Marty D. Singer has indicated they will seek dismissal. Singer told the Daily Mail: "This is one of the most ridiculous lawsuits I've ever had in my over 40 years of practice. It's absurd."

Reeves maintains her position despite the mounting evidence suggesting she was catfished. When asked why Renner would scam her given his wealth, she responded: "Control. Sexual stuff. He's an attention-grabber. He love-bombs them."

The lawsuit highlights the ongoing problem of celebrity impersonation scams, with Renner's case being just one of several reported incidents involving his identity over the past five years.
