Rebecca Adlington Defends Self-Care After Facing Mum Guilt Criticism

Former Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington has firmly responded to a mum guilt shamer who asserted they would never put themselves first after choosing to have children. The 37-year-old athlete, who recently welcomed her third child, Thea Joy, earlier this month, shared her experience of treating herself to a manicure, only to face backlash online.

A Kind Gesture Amidst Newborn Struggles

On Thursday, Adlington took to Instagram to recount how she visited a salon for some pampering but found herself struggling when her newborn daughter began crying. In a heartwarming turn, a kind woman in the salon stepped in to help look after Thea, allowing Rebecca to enjoy her manicure. She expressed her gratitude, writing, Her kindness and taking time out of her day was so lovely. I know it seems small but it's the first thing I've done for me in a long time. A huge thank you to her.

Backlash and Adlington's Response

However, not all responses were positive. Adlington later shared a message from a social media user on her Instagram Story, who claimed that kids should always come first and implied Rebecca should feel guilty for prioritizing self-care. The user suggested it was solely Rebecca's choice to have another child, sparking Adlington's rebuttal.

In her response, Adlington highlighted the unfair burden of mum guilt, stating, Yesterday I got this message after I posted about my nails. I wouldn't normally share this but it made me sad. I didn't choose to have another child... WE chose to have another child. Why is it mum's feel guilty and not 'we feel guilty'. She emphasized the importance of self-care for parents, adding, I relate to this lady so much as I'm sure many of you do, but I want to be better at looking after you, you will be a better parent.

Emotional Journey to Motherhood

Adlington's journey to welcoming Thea Joy has been marked by emotional challenges, including two heartbreaking miscarriages over three years. Earlier this month, she revealed the poignant coincidence that her grandmother, Joyce, passed away on the same day she gave birth to her rainbow baby. She honored her grandmother by giving her daughter the middle name Joy, describing it as a true full circle moment of life.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Adlington shared details of her hospital stay, saying, What a rollercoaster this whole experience has been. Three years, two miscarriages, 39 weeks carrying our magical rainbow girl, and 87 hours in hospital. She also expressed support for others awaiting their own rainbow babies, sending so much love and support your way.

Family Life and Moving Forward

Rebecca Adlington shares her son Albie, two, with her husband Andy Parsons, and her daughter Summer, eight, from her previous marriage to Harry Needs. As she navigates motherhood with three children, her message underscores the need for balance and compassion in parenting discussions, challenging societal expectations that often place undue guilt on mothers.
