In a remarkably candid revelation, global K-pop phenomenon BTS has shared intimate details about the anxieties and challenges they faced ahead of their highly anticipated comeback. The seven-member group, consisting of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook, expressed genuine concerns that their individual successes during a prolonged hiatus might create friction when reuniting for their latest studio album, Arirang.
Navigating Solo Success and Group Dynamics
The boyband had been on hiatus since 2022 while fulfilling South Korea's mandatory military service requirements. During this period, each member pursued substantial solo projects that achieved remarkable milestones. Jimin became the first South Korean solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while J-Hope made history as the first artist from the country to headline a main stage at a major US festival with his performance at Lollapalooza.
V, whose real name is Kim Taehyung, revealed to Rolling Stone magazine that he harbored significant worries about how these individual accomplishments might affect their group chemistry. "Since all seven of us have had solo careers and strengthened our egos. I thought that meant everyone would have much stronger opinions when we came back to work together," V confessed. "But to my surprise, all of the members came in so open-minded, and had grown the depths of their character. I learned so much from them working on this album."
The Arirang Comeback and Tour
Arirang was released in March 2026, marking the group's first full-group record in nearly six years. The album achieved extraordinary commercial success, selling nearly four million copies on its first day and topping the prestigious Billboard 200 chart. Its lead single, Swim, debuted at number one on global music charts, demonstrating the group's enduring international appeal.
The album launch was accompanied by a spectacular free outdoor concert at Seoul's historic Gwanghwamun Square, which was streamed live on Netflix to millions of viewers worldwide. Following this triumphant return, BTS launched their ambitious 82-date Arirang world tour, spanning 34 cities across the globe and scheduled to run through March 2027.
Creative Challenges and Missed Opportunities
The documentary BTS: The Return provided additional insights into the creative process behind Arirang, revealing that Jin had no writing credits on the album. This absence was explained when it emerged that the singer, known for his solo hit 'The Astronaut', was still on tour when other members traveled to Los Angeles for an intensive songwriting camp.
"I was worried fans would be bored while everyone was in the military, so there I was soothing the hearts of our fans. Meanwhile, all the songs got made," Jin told Rolling Stone. "I'm a little bummed. But there's more to life than just the present. There's the future. Plus, if I had been greedy and pushed the whole session so I could add my own songs, this interview would be happening months from now. Wouldn't the fans be too bored during that time?"
Jin's Perspective on Group Priorities
Jin, whose real name is Kim Seokjin, was the first BTS member to enlist for military service, beginning in late 2022 and completing the standard 18-month period until his discharge in June 2024. Following his service, he starred in the Netflix variety show Kian's Bizarre B&B, launched his own web series Run Jin (a spin-off of the group's Run BTS), and embarked on his first solo tour.
Despite these individual achievements, the 33-year-old artist emphasized his unwavering commitment to the group. "I just missed the other members so much. I've always thought there's no reason to continue if it's not with the group," Jin stated emphatically. "I guess a solo career is just not that important to me. If I did anything, it would be trying something different within the group when the fans are bored. I'm not interested in acting or anything like that."
The members' openness about their reunion fears and subsequent discovery of strengthened unity offers a rare glimpse into the complex dynamics of one of the world's most successful musical groups as they navigate individual growth alongside collective creativity.
