Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt are reportedly open to the possibility of making The Devil Wears Prada into a trilogy, following the box office success of the recently released sequel. Two decades after the original film debuted and just days after the sequel premiered in theaters, the leading stars have expressed enthusiasm about reuniting for a third installment.
In a joint interview with People published on Sunday, the trio discussed what it would take for a third movie to happen. Streep, 76, emphasized the importance of the script, stating, 'A good script. It's all about the script.' Blunt, 43, agreed, adding, 'And then, everybody has to say yes,' Hathaway, 43, chimed in. Blunt further noted that the 'core four'—referring to the three actresses plus returning cast member Stanley Tucci—would need to be involved. Streep jokingly added, 'They have to be alive.'
The sequel sees Streep reprising her iconic role as editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, alongside Hathaway as Andy Sachs, now working as Runway's features editor, and Blunt as Emily Charlton, who is running Dior's US operations. The trio must team up to secure advertising dollars to save Runway magazine.
Reflecting on their experiences, Hathaway admitted she was 'a 22-year-old mess' during the first film, while Streep said reprising the role was 'kind of easy.' Blunt added, 'You are sort of fused with this person you're playing. I had a lot of fun slithering back into her shoes.'
The sequel debuted with a $233 million global opening, surpassing the original's $27.5 million domestic opening weekend. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is now in theaters.
