Madonna made a dramatic entrance at the Met Gala 2026 red carpet, wearing a black, gothic-inspired Saint Laurent lace gown paired with satin opera gloves. The 67-year-old music icon swapped her signature blonde hair for a long, raven-hued wig, topped with a headpiece featuring a pirate ship accoutrement. Her look was completed with a long, sheer grey cape that clung to her headdress, statement rings, a chunky pendant necklace, and black boots. She also carried a French horn-like instrument at her side.
Designer and Inspiration
The extravagant ensemble was designed by Anthony Vaccarello, who posed alongside Madonna during the event. Her look was inspired by a 1945 painting called The Temptation of St. Anthony. Fragment II, according to Page Six. Madonna was joined by her much younger boyfriend, Akeem Morris, 29, and the couple danced together inside the star-studded event.
Upcoming Album and Recent Releases
Madonna's appearance comes ahead of her highly anticipated album Confessions II, due out this summer. In April, she teased her return to music after a seven-year hiatus. The new album is a follow-up to her 2005 LP Confessions on a Dance Floor, which featured the smash hit Hung Up. Last week, she released a song with Sabrina Carpenter called Bring Your Love, following their surprise Coachella performance.
Met Gala 2026: Theme and Controversy
This year's Met Gala theme was Costume Art, with the dress code 'Fashion Is Art.' The event was marred by controversy as Hollywood fumed over Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, 62, and his wife Lauren Sanchez, 56, sponsoring the event. Rumours suggest the couple donated $10 million to the Costume Institute in exchange for being named honorary co-chairs. Sources told Page Six the move put them in favour with former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who has spearheaded the fundraiser since 1995. William Norwich, a former editor at Vogue, explained: 'The Bezoses are where the American dream is at right now for status, wealth and style. They display conspicuous consumption and they have the AWOK – the Anna Wintour OK.'
Last year's Met Gala raised $31 million, but this year topped it with $42 million, marking the highest total in the event's history.
