Jamie Lynn Sigler Reveals Deep Bond with James Van Der Beek Before His Passing
Sigler Shares Bond with Van Der Beek Over Illness Before Death

Jamie Lynn Sigler, renowned for her role as Meadow Soprano on the iconic HBO series, has shared intimate details about her final weeks with fellow actor James Van Der Beek before his tragic death. In a heartfelt new interview, Sigler reflected on their deep connection, forged through shared experiences with serious illnesses.

A Friendship Built on Shared Struggles

Sigler, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2016, revealed that she and Van Der Beek, who passed away from colorectal cancer at age 48 in February, bonded profoundly over their health challenges. "I think we bonded a lot on what our illnesses can teach us," Sigler told Us Weekly. The actress expressed her devastation at the loss, stating, "I'm devastated that my friend is no longer here, you know? I think we all knew that there was so much more he could have done."

Moving to Austin for Family and Health

Both Sigler and Van Der Beek relocated to Austin, Texas, after their television careers to focus on their families amidst their diagnoses. Sigler credited this move with helping her embrace acceptance and faith. "I think really stepping into my acceptance and faith happened here in Austin, and with him, too," she explained. She described how they supported each other through pain, pushing past physical limitations to be present for loved ones.

Sigler, 44, who has two sons with her husband Cutter Dykstra, praised Van Der Beek's dedication to fatherhood. "I've never met somebody that is better at and enjoys being a father more," she said. Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.

Emotional Final Moments and Unfulfilled Dreams

In poignant recollections, Sigler shared that she visited Van Der Beek just days before his passing. "I got to see him a few days before he passed, and sit at his bedside," she recounted. She told him, "You wait for me, because we're going to do that dance," referring to a shared dream of dancing together one day. Sigler highlighted their "I see you" moments, where they acknowledged each other's bravery in facing illness.

Legacy and Tributes

Van Der Beek's family announced his death on February 11, noting he faced his final days "with courage, faith and grace." Hollywood responded with an outpouring of social media tributes, and a GoFundMe campaign for his family raised over $2 million. Sigler reflected on his legacy, saying, "In his passing, to see how loved and celebrated he is and will always be. I don't think he even knew that."

Sigler also discussed how her multiple sclerosis influenced personal decisions, such as choosing not to have a third child with her husband. She emphasized the importance of living intentionally, a value she saw embodied in Van Der Beek's parenting. "Nobody did it better than James and Kimberly," she said. "And their children are living proof of how beautifully they have parented and guided and lived with such intention and such care."
