Nicole Kidman Opens Up on Divorce, Family and Future in Candid Variety Interview
Nicole Kidman Discusses Divorce, Family and Career Moves

Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman has posed for a striking new photoshoot for Variety magazine, featuring images of her in black lace underwear, draped only in a towel, and wearing high heels in a bathtub. The Australian star, now 58, also provided a rare and candid interview addressing her recent divorce from country singer Keith Urban, her family life, and her bustling professional schedule.

Addressing the Divorce and Family Unity

Kidman and Urban, who were married from 2006 until their separation in 2025, share two daughters: Sunday Rose, aged 17, and Faith Margaret, aged 15. When questioned about the divorce, Kidman emphasized her focus on maintaining family cohesion. "What I’m grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That’s that. Everything else I don’t discuss out of respect," she told writer Matt Donnelly.

"I’m staying in a place of, 'We are a family,' and that’s what we’ll continue to be. My beautiful girls, my darlings, who are suddenly women," Kidman added. She described her children as "very different, but we’re deeply connected and close."

Emotional State and Post-Divorce Travel

Reflecting on her emotional wellbeing since the separation, Kidman stated, "I am, because I’m always going to be moving toward what’s good." She acknowledged that during the divorce proceedings last year, she was "quiet" and "in my shell," citing other personal matters.

Following the divorce, Kidman embarked on extensive travels with her family. "I went to Antarctica. We’re going to head to the Galápagos and then hike Machu Picchu. I took my sister, nieces and nephews and loads of friends on a cruise. We met so many good people that we didn’t know," she shared. The actress highlighted her adventurous spirit, noting, "I’ve gone to the Algerian border with Werner Herzog to ride camels. My kids have gotten to live in Morocco and see so much more of what the world is."

Upcoming Professional Projects

Kidman has a packed slate of projects for the coming year, signaling a busy period post-divorce. Her current roles include:

  • Starring in Scarpetta on Prime Video, where she plays a medical examiner from Patricia Cornwell’s books.
  • Appearing in Practical Magic 2 this fall, reuniting with Sandra Bullock.
  • Filming the third season of Lioness, created by Taylor Sheridan, alongside Zoe Saldana and Morgan Freeman.

Discussing her collaboration with Bullock, Kidman expressed admiration: "I love Sandy. I love her. And we’re so different... We’re like sisters. I have so much protection and love for her. We also have incredible chemistry." She praised their complementary skill sets, with Bullock being hands-on while Kidman prefers delegating.

Personal Reflections and Loss

The interview also touched on Kidman’s personal grief following the death of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, in September 2024 at age 84. Kidman missed an award ceremony at the Venice Film Festival to be with her family during that time.

"There’s still pain. We’re motherless now," Kidman said, relating to Donnelly’s own loss. She shared that her mother, from a generation with limited opportunities, inspires her to live fully: "My mother came from a generation where she couldn’t fulfill her intellectual and professional ambition... So I’m trying to carry that forward."

Kidman finds comfort in small signs, such as ladybugs, which she associates with her mother. "I see ladybugs; that was my mom’s thing... Whether it’s true or not, it’s soothing. I’ll accept that," she remarked, recounting a humorous exchange with her daughter about the symbolism.

Looking Ahead to 2026

With a positive outlook, Kidman concluded, "Now I’m in a place of saying, '2026. Here we go.'" Her interview and photoshoot for Variety capture a moment of resilience, family focus, and professional vigor as she navigates life after divorce.
