MLB Criticizes Bible Verses on Giants Pride Caps

Major League Baseball has released a statement criticizing players who wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night caps following an incident at a San Francisco Giants game last week.

Incident Details

During Friday's game against the Chicago Cubs, Giants pitchers Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker inscribed Bible verses on their Pride caps, while pitcher Sam Hentges declined to wear the cap entirely. Roupp wrote 'Gen 9:12-16' on his cap, referencing a verse that mentions a rainbow, a symbol of Pride. The verse speaks of God's covenant with all living creatures.

MLB's Response

On Monday, MLB Chief Communications Officer Pat Courtney stated: 'The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations.'

Players' Statements

Roupp denied any malicious intent, saying: 'There's no hate at all. It's just what I stand for, and what I stand on: I believe in God. It's just about God's covenant and a promise that he makes to us.' Hentges added: 'It's just something that I feel like I was forced to support when I don't morally support it. There wasn't hatred behind it.'

Giants' Position

Giants manager Tony Vitello acknowledged players' freedom to choose, but praised the organization's efforts to embrace the community. The Giants released a statement affirming their commitment to Pride Night and inclusion, while respecting individual choices. They apologized for any pain caused and reiterated their dedication to creating a welcoming environment for all.
