Madonna has released a new music video for her upcoming album Confessions II, proving that at 67 she remains as provocative and boundary-pushing as ever. The 10-minute film, titled Confessions II – The Film, features cameos from Benedict Cumberbatch, Sabrina Carpenter, Kate Moss, Richard E Grant, and Julia Garner, among others.
The video includes a car crash, lasers beaming out of vaginas, a simulated sex act in a toilet, and references to cocaine and club culture. It opens with a monologue about creating a 'new persona' and being 'whoever [she] wants to be', before transporting viewers into a world of scandal, sex appeal, and resilience.
Madonna pays homage to her late friend Martin Burgoyne, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1986, by casting Daniele Sibilli to play him. The video also features the Grindr logo, underscoring her ongoing LGBTQ+ allyship, which she recently demonstrated with a free concert in Times Square in partnership with the hook-up app.
There are subtle Easter eggs for fans, including a nod to her early career when she hands out a cassette of her 1982 track Everybody in a club bathroom, referencing her pre-record label days. The video has been praised on social media, with fans calling it 'legendary' and a 'masterclass' in pop stardom.
Madonna's comeback continues with her album Confessions II, and the video serves as a reminder of her enduring influence in an era where music videos are often neglected in favour of TikTok trends and AI-generated content.
