Pop legend Madonna has issued a mock-outraged retort to her artist son, Rocco Ritchie, after he suggested she compelled him to hang a portrait of her in his professional workspace. The light-hearted family exchange unfolded on social media following a tour of Rocco's well-appointed Chelsea studio.
A Whistle-Stop Tour Sparks Playful Spat
The 25-year-old painter, who recently launched his new exhibition 'Talk Is Cheap', gave fans a glimpse into his West London creative base. During a filmed interview for 72 magazine, he highlighted a wall featuring an assortment of influential figures, including works by Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Alongside a childhood photo with his father, filmmaker Guy Ritchie, was a distinctive image of Madonna dressed in a vintage suit, tie, and Wellington boots. Drawing attention to it, Rocco remarked, 'Had to put mum in here. Otherwise, you know, she wouldn't have been very happy.'
Madonna swiftly responded in the comments, writing: 'Excuse me, “you had to put mum in here or she wouldn’t be happy”?!!! Take that back!!!!!' The interaction showcased the pair's familiar, teasing dynamic.
A Rare Family Reunion at the Exhibition Launch
The studio tour came after the Sunday evening launch of Rocco's exhibition at a warehouse space in Soho. The event was notably significant as it marked the first public appearance together for Madonna and Guy Ritchie since their bitter divorce in 2008.
The couple, who married at Skibo Castle in Scotland in December 2000, finalised their divorce eight years later, citing irreconcilable differences. Their split was played out publicly, with Madonna once branding Guy 'emotionally retarded', while he claimed she was overly invested in celebrity culture.
Despite the past acrimony, both parents were seen deep in conversation at the venue, supporting their son's career milestone. On social media, Rocco acknowledged his privileged position while expressing pride in his family. 'I am proud to be who I am, but I’m even prouder to have both of my parents together in one room supporting me,' he wrote.
Building a Career Beyond the Famous Name
Rocco Ritchie has deliberately worked to establish his artistic credentials separate from his globally famous mother. He initially built his career under the pseudonym 'Rhed' to gain recognition for his work rather than his lineage. While he has since exhibited under his own name, the alias was crucial in forging his initial artistic identity.
Madonna has six children in total: Lourdes, 29, with Carlos Leon; Rocco, with Guy Ritchie; and adopted children David, 20, Mercy, 18, and twins Stella and Estere, 13. The family's united front at Rocco's show presented a starkly different image from the last time they were pictured together amid the divorce proceedings in 2008.
