Actress Lily Collins has given a remarkably candid insight into her experience filming the latest season of the hit Netflix show Emily in Paris, admitting she felt she was 'not on her game'. The 36-year-old star, who gave birth to her daughter Tove earlier this year, has spoken openly about the challenges of juggling new motherhood with her demanding role as Emily Cooper.
Embracing Imperfection as a New Mother
In a frank interview, Collins explained that she had to consciously let go of her perfectionist tendencies while working on the show's fifth season. She returned to filming when her daughter, born via surrogacy in January, was just three and a half months old. 'I took my hands off perfectionism,' she stated. 'You cannot focus on perfectionism when your focus is on all these other hats you’re wearing.'
The actress proactively communicated her situation to the production team, asking for understanding regarding the monumental life change. 'I said to everyone this year, ‘I’m really good with memorisation, I’m really good with knowing my lines, but this year give me some grace. I’ve not slept, I’m very tired and I may not be on my game,’' Collins revealed.
A New Purpose and a Positive Outcome
Despite her initial concerns, Collins found a silver lining in her altered approach. She discovered more joy on set by releasing the pressure to be perfect. 'And you know what? Who was in the blooper reel more this year? Me. Who had more fun this year? Me, because I let go of perfectionism and I was so grateful,' she shared.
Her daughter Tove became her new driving force, fundamentally shifting her perspective. 'You have a different purpose and it’s really tough. I have a greater purpose now and I miss her so much,' Collins said, adding that she is still navigating the balance of work and motherhood in real time. Her daughter did visit the Paris set, but Collins admits the juggling act remains a 'struggle'.
Season Five Release and New Additions
The fifth season of Emily in Paris is scheduled for release on Netflix this Thursday, approximately 15 months after season four premiered. The series, which also stars Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu and Ashley Park, continues to follow American marketing executive Emily Cooper's life and career in the French capital.
Fans can expect some fresh faces this season, including actor Bryan Greenberg, known for How to Make It in America and Suits LA. He will play Jake, an American expat living in Paris. The show, a global phenomenon since its 2020 debut, shows no signs of slowing down, with early previews for the new season reportedly positive.
Collins, originally from Guildford in Surrey, was cast in the lead role in April 2019 following her performance in a television adaptation of Les Misérables.
