Lena Dunham Confesses to Infidelity During Relationship with Jack Antonoff
Lena Dunham has publicly revealed that she cheated on her former partner, music producer Jack Antonoff, towards the end of their six-year relationship. The confession is detailed in her forthcoming memoir, Famesick, which delves into the strains and challenges that ultimately led to their split in 2018.
Chronic Pain and Relationship Strain
According to excerpts from the book, Dunham suggests that their relationship became increasingly difficult as she battled chronic pain, a condition that impacted various aspects of their life together, from intimacy to holiday plans. The 39-year-old creator of the HBO series Girls writes that the couple experienced their "worst fight" when she discussed her growing reliance on pain medication with Antonoff, just two weeks after undergoing a hysterectomy to treat endometriosis.
Dunham recounts that Antonoff's response was to angrily flush all her pills down the toilet, necessitating an urgent call to her doctor and a late-night pharmacy trip to prevent withdrawal symptoms. This incident, she claims, left her feeling deeply hurt and prompted a desire "to be wanted."
The Act of Infidelity
In the memoir, Dunham describes herself as "an adultress" and reveals that she texted an old school friend to meet her, leading to them sleeping together that same evening. She reflects on this moment as a turning point, acknowledging the emotional turmoil that drove her actions.
Dunham also speculates that Antonoff may have strayed during their relationship, noting public speculation about his connection with musician Lorde at the time. Both Antonoff and Lorde denied these rumors previously.
Background and Aftermath
The pair first met in 2012, set up on a blind date by comedian Mike Birbiglia, coinciding with the premiere of Dunham's hit show Girls. Antonoff, who has since become a super producer for artists like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, was then enjoying commercial success with his pop band, Fun.
Five months after their breakup, Dunham wrote in an essay for Vogue about the emotional finality of their separation, describing how their "obsessive connection had turned to blind devotion" before ultimately fading. She expressed the intense heartbreak of ending her first serious relationship, a sentiment she reiterated in a recent interview with The New York Times ahead of Famesick's launch.
In the interview, Dunham remarked on the unique experience of having breakup songs written by an ex, stating, "I feel blessed. I was a really late bloomer. That was my first. I felt like you fall in love with someone and then you're together for the rest of your life. That ending was extremely intense for me."
Moving On
Since their split, both individuals have moved on to new relationships. Dunham married British musician Luis Felber in 2021, while Antonoff wed actor Margaret Qualley in 2023. Their past, however, continues to be a topic of public interest, especially with the revelations in Dunham's memoir shedding new light on the private struggles that marked their time together.
