Police Watchdog Investigates Eleven Officers Over Fatal Wimbledon School Crash
Eleven Metropolitan Police officers are under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) regarding their handling of the initial investigation into a devastating crash at a primary school in Wimbledon that claimed the lives of two young girls. The tragic incident occurred at The Study Prep school in south-west London in July 2023, during celebrations for the last day of the summer term. Eight-year-olds Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau lost their lives in the collision, which also injured multiple other individuals.
Families' Concerns and Reopened Inquiry
The families of Nuria and Selena have consistently expressed doubts about the thoroughness of the original police investigation. In October 2023, following these concerns, the Metropolitan Police announced it would reopen its inquiry and re-arrested the driver of the 4X4 vehicle that ploughed into the school. This decision came after the Crown Prosecution Service initially decided to take no further action against the driver in June 2024, a move that further fueled the families' assertions that the investigation was flawed.
Scope of the IOPC Investigation
In a detailed statement, IOPC director Amanda Rowe outlined the scope of the watchdog's investigation, which began in August 2025 after a referral from the Met Police. The complaints being examined include serious allegations about the standard of the initial investigation, covering its management, direction, and the conduct of the investigation team. Additionally, the IOPC is probing concerns about the officers' engagement with the victims and their families.
More critically, the investigation is looking into allegations that Met officers provided false and misleading information to those affected by the crash. The watchdog is also examining whether the treatment of victims and their families was influenced by racial bias, adding a significant dimension to the case.
Officers Served with Misconduct Notices
The IOPC has served misconduct notices to several officers, indicating the seriousness of the allegations. Four serving officers—holding ranks of commander, detective chief inspector, detective sergeant, and detective constable—along with a former detective inspector, have been notified that their conduct is being investigated at the level of gross misconduct. Two additional detective constables are under investigation at the misconduct level. All officers served with notices will be interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation, though the IOPC notes that serving notices does not guarantee subsequent proceedings.
Families' Pursuit of Truth
In a heartfelt statement, the families of Nuria and Selena reflected on the profound impact of the tragedy, stating that their lives were irreparably shattered on July 6, 2023. They described the past 33 months as incredibly difficult for everyone affected, including those who lost family members, were seriously injured, or witnessed the horrific incident. The families expressed encouragement that the IOPC has opened an inquiry, reaffirming their commitment to seeking the truth and championing complete clarity on the events of that devastating day and the subsequent actions taken by the Metropolitan Police.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about police accountability and the handling of sensitive investigations, particularly those involving tragic loss of life and potential systemic issues within law enforcement agencies.
