In a recent candid interview, singer and actress Jessica Simpson has revisited a memorable and somewhat awkward moment from her early career involving her That '70s Show co-star, Ashton Kutcher.
An On-Set Confession
The 45-year-old star chatted with Entertainment Tonight this Thursday, looking back on a 2002 interview clip. This prompted her to recall the unusual exchange that took place while she was filming the Fox series. Simpson appeared in three episodes of the show's fifth season, playing Annette Berkardt, a love interest for Kutcher's character, Michael Kelso.
In a classic case of art imitating life, the show's storyline saw her character reveal to Kelso that she was a virgin. This mirrored Simpson's own real-life situation at the time, as she was in her early twenties and had publicly declared she was waiting until marriage to have sex.
The Unforgettable Question
"I was just shooting a scene with Ashton - Michael - and I was telling him that we couldn't do it because I was a virgin," Simpson recounted from the 2002 exchange. Reflecting on it in 2025, Simpson laughed about the past interview, revealing Kutcher's blunt reaction.
"I'll never forget telling Ashton I was a virgin," Simpson said. "He was like, 'Why?'" Her response to him was simple and heartfelt: "Because I haven't met my husband yet."
Life Beyond the Show
During the same interview, where she was promoting her perfume Mystic Canyon, Simpson also discussed a past wardrobe malfunction at New York City's Madison Square Garden, witnessed by her friend Ricky Martin.
Simpson, who recently celebrated her eighth year of sobriety from alcohol, is a mother to three children with her estranged husband, former NFL player Eric Johnson: daughter Maxwell, 13, son Ace, 12, and daughter Birdie, 6. The couple split after celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary in the summer of 2024, having wed in July 2014 after four years of dating.
This was not Simpson's first marriage; she was previously wed to entertainer Nick Lachey. In her 2020 memoir, Open Book, she spoke candidly about the inner struggle to maintain her vow of abstinence before that marriage, once saying, "One time, Nick hugged me, and I thought I was just going to burst into flames."
