Television presenter and singer Jane McDonald has candidly revealed the brutal moment she was rejected from the iconic pop group Bucks Fizz because of her appearance, confessing the experience left her feeling utterly "gutted." The 62-year-old star appeared on BBC One's The One Show on Monday evening to promote her latest album, Living the Dream, which has impressively climbed to the number-five position on the UK's official listening charts.
Emotional Career Reflections on National Television
During her appearance, Jane performed her new single Beautiful Soul and participated in an emotional video segment that chronicled her remarkable journey through the entertainment industry. Hosts Alex Jones and JB Gill prompted her to consider how her life might have taken "a very different path" had she successfully joined a pop band during her formative years.
It was during this conversation that Jane disclosed her unsuccessful audition for the Eurovision Song Contest-winning band Bucks Fizz, attributing the rejection specifically to her hair colour. "Yes, I went for an audition for Bucks Fizz when I was younger and I got down to the last ten, and I thought, 'I'm in here'," Jane recounted. "They said, 'No, we want a blonde', and so I said 'Couldn't you have told me that when I was in the top 100?' - because there were queues all down the street to get into Bucks Fizz."
Moving Forward with Resilience and Success
Despite this early setback, Jane maintained a positive outlook, adding: "I'd have loved to, but anyone, I've done alright so I'm okay." She then shifted focus to her current musical project, explaining that her new album is "country inspired" rather than strictly country, having been recorded in Nashville's legendary Blackbird Studio.
"Channel 5 are going to show that on April 9 and 10, which is very exciting. It was an absolutely incredible thing!" Jane exclaimed. "We booked the Blackbird Studio, which is iconic, and I sat in the same chair as Taylor Swift when she did her album! I actually thought to myself, 'What the heck am I doing here?' But just wow, just a wow, wow moment."
Startling Confessions About Her Marriage
In a separate revelation, Jane McDonald has confessed that she was never truly in love with her ex-husband Henrik Brixen, describing his decision to end their eight-year marriage as "the best thing he ever did." The Danish ship plumbing engineer, who later became her manager, shared a lengthy relationship with the singer that ultimately proved emotionally unfulfilling.
Jane shared these intimate details while reflecting on her Las Vegas shows in 2001 during an appearance on the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware. "It's really strange this, because I should have had the best time of my life. I just got to Vegas, but I knew my marriage was on the brink," she revealed.
Recognising the Reality of Her Relationship
Describing Henrik as a "nice guy," Jane acknowledged they had married "very publicly" but admitted she wasn't "in love" with him. "Oh no, I really wasn't, everybody could see it and was going, that's not gonna last. I was the only one who didn't see it. But he was a great guy, and he did his best, you know," she confessed.
When questioned about Henrik's managerial capabilities, Jane offered a nuanced assessment: "He was, he was in certain things. He was brilliant, but he was very Danish and didn't understand that it's all a game, our business, and you have to play it." She elaborated on the challenges of navigating the music industry as a former cruise ship singer, noting that her unexpected success with a number-one album and sold-out tours created significant professional learning curves.
Overcoming Industry Challenges Independently
Jane detailed how she eventually took control of her career after being dropped by record labels, funding her own tours and albums by leveraging her property. "You don't realise that, every artist thinks they need a record company, and you don't. You just need a bit of money," she explained. "So if you've got a backer or a good bank like I had, you know, they'll just say, Yeah, off you go. I put my house up more times to fund, because I had no kids, it didn't matter to me."
Her perseverance ultimately paid off, with Jane crediting her loyal fan base for sustaining her career. "And my fans are the best in the world. And they stood with me. So it's only been the last sort of five years that I've finally been able to breathe now, but I never gave up. And I think that's the thing," she reflected.
Personal Loss and Continuing Grief
Following her separation from Henrik in 2003, Jane rekindled a relationship with her teenage sweetheart Eddie Rothe, becoming engaged in 2008 before his tragic death from lung cancer in 2021. Four years after this devastating loss, Jane recently shared that "not a day goes by where she doesn't think of him."
"Of course I do. There's not a day goes by that I don't think of (Eddie), talk of him - It's awful," she told Bella Magazine. "I'm not going to butter this up in any way: grief stays with you all the time, but what you have to do is sit it beside joy. You have to bring as much joy into your life as humanly possible, so that you feel more joy than the grief. I'm just about level now."
Jane maintains a daily practice of choosing positivity through mantras, demonstrating remarkable resilience in the face of personal and professional challenges throughout her decades-long career in the spotlight.
