Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken out against the term 'nepo baby', describing it as an 'ugly moniker' and arguing that children of famous people should not face negative judgment for following in their parents' footsteps. The 51-year-old actor and Goop founder made the comments in a Bustle interview, defending her 19-year-old daughter Apple, who recently modelled for Chanel.
Paltrow, whose parents are actor Blythe Danner and director Bruce Paltrow, and who is goddaughter to Steven Spielberg, acknowledged her own status as a nepo baby. Spielberg gave her first film role as Wendy Darling in the 1991 film Hook. She also worked with her father on the 2000 film Duets and with her mother on the 2003 film Sylvia.
She said: 'Now there's this whole nepo baby culture, and there's this judgment that exists around kids of famous people. But there's nothing wrong with doing or wanting to do what your parents do.' She added that nobody criticises children who want to become doctors like their parents, and that growing up in an artistic household naturally influences career choices.
Paltrow hopes her children, including son Moses with ex-husband Chris Martin, will 'feel free to pursue exactly what they want to do, irrespective of what anybody's going to think or say.'
