Television presenter Davina McCall has shared the profoundly sentimental reason behind the unique design of her wedding ring, which contains a replica of her new husband's 'eyeball'. The 58-year-old star, who married 49-year-old hairdresser Michael Douglas last month, explained the keepsake allows her to feel close to him when they are apart.
A Ring Forged in Love and Support
Speaking to Geoff Lloyd on Virgin Radio UK, Davina opened up about the emotional significance of the unusual jewellery. 'What’s so nice for me is if I’m at work or I’m not with Michael and I catch sight of the ring, I feel like he’s with me,' she revealed. The couple's decision to formalise their union follows a period where Michael stood by Davina through significant health challenges, including surgery to remove a benign brain tumour and a recent breast cancer diagnosis.
Michael Douglas provided insight into the ring's unusual creation. 'They are actually made by a prosthetic eye company,' he explained. 'They make eyes for people who need an eye and then they get put into rings.' This transformation of medical craftsmanship into a symbol of enduring love underscores the deeply personal nature of their bond.
An Intimate and Therapeutic Ceremony
The couple tied the knot in a small London ceremony attended by just eleven guests, a deliberately intimate gathering comprising 'everyone who is special in their lives.' The wedding took place merely three months after Michael proposed during a romantic trip to Ibiza. Friends of the couple have suggested that Davina's recent health struggles played a part in their decision to marry now rather than wait.
Reflecting on the day, Michael described it as a deeply moving experience. 'The wedding felt like a therapeutic event in some way,' he admitted, noting there were plenty of tears. The following day, the newlyweds carried on with life as normal, even attending a friend's wedding where they proudly presented themselves as a married couple for the first time.
A Friendship That Blossomed Into Romance
Davina and Michael's relationship has deep roots. They first met years ago at Hertfordshire’s Elstree Studios when Davina was presenting Big Brother. For a long time, they maintained a close platonic friendship. That friendship transformed into romance following the collapse of Davina's 17-year marriage to Matthew Robertson, the father of her three children—Holly, 24, Tilly, 22, and Chester, 19—in 2017.
The proposal itself came as a surprise during their Ibiza getaway. Davina recalled the moment on the Chris Evans Virgin Radio Show, humorously noting she was wearing impractical 'little pink cowboy boots with steel toe caps' when Michael led her on a cliff walk to pop the question. Her daughter Tilly, 21, shared the family's excitement ahead of the wedding, posting a TikTok video captioned: 'Be prepared to be SICK of me.'
In a recent social media post, Davina broke her silence on the marriage to praise her 'lovely' new husband, reposting one of his hairdressing videos. She also shared a poignant poem by Harry Baker that celebrates the simple, comforting moments of a shared life, resonating with the couple's down-to-earth approach to their partnership.
