Carol McGiffin Opens Up About Regretting Her Marriage to Chris Evans

Television personality Carol McGiffin has made a startling confession about her first marriage to radio DJ Chris Evans, revealing she deeply regrets their union and spent much of their relationship disliking him. The 66-year-old Loose Women star, who was married to Evans from 1991 to 1998, described their marriage as a "big mistake" during a candid new interview.

'I Didn't Want to Be Married to Him Anymore'

Speaking on the Suddenly Single podcast, McGiffin admitted she "doesn't really know" why she married Evans in the first place. "It was a big mistake, and whatever he was getting up to when I wasn't around, I didn't know for sure, but I kind of didn't really care," she revealed. "I didn't, for quite a lot of time, I didn't like him."

The presenter shared that she had suspicions about Evans being unfaithful during their marriage but didn't confront him because she had already decided she no longer wanted to be married to him. "In the end, it was obviously my first marriage, and I didn't want to be married to him anymore anyway," McGiffin explained.

Previous Criticism and Manipulation Claims

This isn't the first time McGiffin has publicly criticized her ex-husband. Back in 2019 on Loose Women, she described Evans as "very manipulative" and claimed he was "nothing without me." She explained their decision to marry by saying, "I was just swept along, at the time I convinced myself I couldn't live without him."

In a 2010 interview with Daily Mail, McGiffin went further, comparing Evans to a "Class A drug" that she was "well and truly addicted" to. She described how the relationship changed her personality, saying, "For a while back there, I turned into a crazy, dependent, idiotic human being bearing absolutely no resemblance to the person that I was when I met him."

Turbulent Relationship Details

McGiffin shared specific examples of their troubled dynamic, including frequent arguments about trivial matters. "We argued all the time. Our rows were pathetic," she recalled. "We had one about a can of deodorant - the second he'd bought in the eight months he'd been living with me."

She described one particularly childish incident where Evans threw a deodorant can across the room, smashing cassette cases, then squeezed toothpaste down the toilet the next morning in retaliation. "See? Pathetic," McGiffin concluded about their relationship dynamics.

Post-Divorce Lives and New Relationships

Despite her negative experience with Evans, McGiffin didn't give up on marriage entirely. She secretly wed Mark Cassidy in Thailand in 2018, keeping the news private for a full year before revealing their union.

Chris Evans moved on to marry actress Billie Piper in 2001 after a whirlwind six-month relationship, though their 16-year age gap sparked controversy at the time. They divorced in 2007 but have remained close friends, with Evans even attending Piper's wedding to Laurence Fox. Sources revealed in 2016 that Piper leaned on Evans during her divorce from Fox, describing him as her "soulmate."

Evans later married golfer Natasha Shishmanian in 2007, and they have four children together: Noah (17), Eli (13), and twins Walt and Boo (7). Their family expanded through both natural conception and IVF treatments after Shishmanian experienced a near-fatal ectopic pregnancy in 2010. Evans also became a grandfather in 2015 when his daughter Jade from a previous relationship had a son named Teddy.

Reflection on Being Single

Reflecting on her relationship history during the podcast interview, McGiffin noted, "I have been single most of my life." She added perspective about infidelity, saying, "People get past being cheated on, let me say that," while clarifying, "I'm not making excuses for bad behaviour, I've never cheated on anyone."

The television personality separated from Evans after just two years of marriage, though their divorce wasn't finalized until 1998. Looking back on that period of her life, McGiffin maintains that marrying Evans "wasn't a good idea" and that she persevered with the relationship out of determination to make it work, despite her growing dislike for him.
