A father has shocked a courtroom in Syracuse, New York, by smirking and chuckling as he pleaded guilty to killing his 11-year-old son and his girlfriend. David Huff, 43, confessed to shooting 32-year-old Yeraldith Tschudy and Jeremiah Huff in March 2025, local media reported.
Courtroom Behaviour
According to reports, Huff smiled and laughed as Judge Ted Limpert read the charges against him. The judge reportedly asked: "You find this funny?" Huff replied that he had a joke stuck in his head. He denied shooting his son in the face but admitted to both killings, stating, "I’m guilty of all that. Whatever you guys say, I’m guilty of."
Details of the Crime
Both victims were killed using a 12-gauge shotgun. Investigators also said that Huff fired at his stepfather. Jeremiah’s mother, Samantha Gallup Peltier, called emergency services after receiving a disturbing call from her son just before the shootings.
Huff fled the scene but was arrested by state police the following morning. The defence had waited months for a medical expert to evaluate Huff's mental health. Defence lawyer Shaun Chase said multiple experts concluded any mental incapacity was due to voluntary abuse of alcohol or drugs. It remains unclear if Huff had used substances on the night of the killings.
Legal Proceedings
Huff was found competent to stand trial and chose to plead guilty to second-degree murder charges rather than first-degree murder. This means he may be eligible for parole in New York State, often after serving a set number of years. Sentencing will occur at a later date.
