BBC Springwatch fans 'bereft' as Packham announces final episode

BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham delivered disappointing news just moments into the latest episode, leaving viewers gutted. The 65-year-old host was back for Thursday's edition alongside co-host Michaela Strachan, broadcasting from the National Trust Crom estate in Northern Ireland once more.

Final Episode Announcement

While introducing the programme, Chris announced it would be the final episode of this year's series. He said: "Welcome to the final programme of Springwatch 2026, coming to you from the ever picturesque estate here at Crom in Northern Ireland. It's the last of our run but we've got some great stuff coming up."

Viewer Reactions

Viewers immediately took to social media, with numerous fans voicing their disappointment. One commented: "Last Springwatch which is sad, but it has been fantastic as always." Another agreed: "I am sad that Springwatch ends tonight, but glad that I will get to see it."

"Final #Springwatch of the year. A really enjoyable three weeks of TV, but like the English summer it's over in no time!" wrote another viewer. Someone else posted: "Can't believe it's last episode already, just love watching and listening to what nature has to offer, we really need a summer or autumn series not wait till winter."

"I'll miss you!" said another viewer. "I always feel really sad when Springwatch finishes," said another fan. "Well that's Springwatch over for another year - we're a bit sad - it's one of our favourite programmes along with Winterwatch."

"I always feel sad and quite bereft when Springwatch ends but, this year, I'm quite emotional!" said one fan. "Combination of how I'm feeling and the horrors in the world; it's been an oasis of nature for three weeks."

Wrapping Up the Series

Although the programme is drawing to a close and the cameras positioned inside the various nests will shortly be switched off, Michaela urged viewers to visit Springwatch's social media channels, where they can continue enjoying wildlife content over the coming fortnight. Wrapping up the series, she said: "That brings us to the end of the three weeks. It always goes so quickly, doesn't it? We have had such a great time here in Northern Ireland. We'd like to say a big thank you to National Trust Crom Estate for hosting us and a big thanks to all the staff and volunteers for making us feel so welcome."

Chris added: "And to all of you for joining in, sending us all of your videos, all of your photographs, some of which have been absolutely sensational." He continued: "Whilst we are off air, remember you can stay engaged with Facebook and Instagram."

The episode finished with highlights from across the previous three weeks, as Chris declared: "It's goodbye from Crom. See you soon, but in the meantime, have a look at this."

Springwatch is available on BBC iPlayer.
