Coronation Street's Ashley Peacock Actor Rules Out Soap Return Despite Fan Demand
Steven Arnold, the actor who portrayed the beloved character Ashley Peacock on Coronation Street for 15 years, has openly discussed the possibility of a return to the iconic ITV soap. Arnold's portrayal of the Weatherfield butcher captivated audiences with his cheeky demeanor and involvement in two high-profile romances during his tenure on the show.
A Look Back at Ashley Peacock's Coronation Street Journey
Ashley Peacock first charmed viewers with his distinctive look and engaging storylines. His character was involved in significant plotlines, including a romance with Maxine, who was tragically murdered by serial killer Richard Hillman in 2003, and later marrying Claire in a memorable Christmas Day episode in 2004. Arnold's time on the soap came to an end in 2010 when Ashley was killed off during the tram crash that celebrated Coronation Street's 50th anniversary.
Since departing the cobbles, Steven Arnold has remained active in the acting world, taking on numerous projects across theatre, television, and film. Reflecting on his favourite moments from the soap, Arnold highlighted his collaboration with the late John Savident, who played his on-screen father, Fred Elliot.
"Working with John Savident, who played my dad, Fred Elliot. He had such a wealth of experience. Even now, when I go into colleges to teach acting, I can hear his words coming through my mouth," Arnold shared. "He taught me how to act on set, how to give passion to a character. I miss him so much. He was like a father to me. I can’t even begin to explain how much that man taught me."
Current Connections and Future Prospects
While Arnold no longer maintains regular contact with the Coronation Street cast, he noted that Julia Haworth, who played his on-screen wife Claire, frequently attends his shows with her children, and other crew members also show their support. However, in a revelation that may disappoint many fans, Arnold has firmly ruled out a return to the ITV soap.
This decision comes at a time when other British soaps, such as EastEnders and Emmerdale, have revived characters previously thought dead, including Cindy Beale, Roxy Mitchell, and Graham Foster. Despite this trend, Arnold explained his stance clearly.
"I wouldn’t return," he stated, elaborating on his reasons. "Ashley was crushed by this falling beam and it was hanging on chains. We filmed the episode and I went off and had my leaving party."
Ashley Peacock's Lasting Legacy
Steven Arnold previously expressed that Ashley Peacock will always hold a special place in his heart, acknowledging that he sometimes misses the character. He revealed that elements of Ashley continue to influence the roles he takes on today.
"He’ll always have a special place in my heart as I played him for such a long time. There’s elements that you miss but you can still put him in characters that you play here and there," Arnold explained.
This sentiment underscores the deep connection Arnold feels to the role that defined a significant portion of his career, even as he moves forward with new projects and opportunities in the entertainment industry.
