Apple Martin, the 21-year-old daughter of Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, is facing intense scrutiny after her musical debut, with critics labelling her a 'nepo-baby' who hasn't inherited her father's famed talent.
A Surprise Performance in Nashville
The aspiring musician took to the stage last month for a surprise gig at Cannery Hall in Nashville. Performing alongside the musical duo Jade Street, Apple sang their collaborative track 'Satellite,' which is scheduled for release on October 28.
While the model looked chic in a cropped white top, black mini skirt, and knee-high boots, her vocal abilities failed to impress many who saw videos of the performance that quickly circulated on social media.
Social Media Backlash and Nepotism Claims
The online reaction, particularly on TikTok, was swift and scathing. An influx of comments slammed the performance, with many users insisting her singing resembled 'drunken karaoke.'
Comments on the platform included harsh critiques such as, 'Nepotism has killed art,' and, 'This is a nepotism baby I don't support.' Another user questioned, 'Aren't we bored with nepotism yet?' Further remarks highlighted the disparity between her performance and her father's legacy, with one person stating, 'Sorry but she needs to leave the singing to her dad,' and another adding, 'That’s on inheriting Gwyneth’s audacity.'
Life Beyond the Spotlight
Despite the foray into music, Apple's primary focus appears to be her education. She is currently studying at Vanderbilt University as a law, history and society major.
In an interview with Interview magazine earlier this year, she revealed her recreational involvement in acting and singing with the university's cabaret theatre group. 'I'm definitely not the best in the org, but I love it,' she said, acknowledging her 'very low voice' which often places her in harmonies with the male singers.
This criticism comes just as Apple showcased a different side to her life on Instagram, sharing a stunning photo of herself on a beach in a red bikini, a look that drew comparisons to her famous mother and captivated her 45,000 followers.
Apple and her 19-year-old brother Moses are the children of Gwyneth Paltrow, 53, and Chris Martin, 48, who were married from 2003 to 2016. Her father's band, Coldplay, has won seven Grammy Awards and sold over 160 million records worldwide.
