Christie's New Rostrum by Jony Ive Marks 260th Anniversary

Christie's, the prestigious British auction house, has introduced a new auctioneer's rostrum to mark its 260th anniversary, designed in collaboration with British-born designer Sir Jony Ive and his firm LoveFrom. The sustainable oak design was unveiled at Christie's headquarters on King Street in central London, replacing the signature mahogany model that has been a fixture for decades.

A Sustainable and Modern Design

The new rostrum, crafted from sustainably sourced oak with stainless steel elements, was developed in partnership with furniture company Benchmark. Sir Jony Ive described the project as "unforgettably special," noting that it required extensive research and learning. He emphasized that the design aims to celebrate craft and material while providing a stage that elevates the auctioneer both literally and figuratively.

Historical Significance and Legacy

The original rostrum was inspired by a design made by Thomas Chippendale for founder James Christie, who conducted the company's first auction in 1766. Sir Jony acknowledged the masterful and intimidating nature of Chippendale's work, stating that the new design is a modest object that carries the Christie's mark with integrity and beauty.

Christie's chief executive Bonnie Brennan expressed pride in the unveiling, calling the rostrum a legacy for the company's future. She highlighted the honour of working with Sir Jony Ive, an iconic designer, and thanked him for his dedication to the project. The new rostrum will be rolled out globally across Christie's auction houses later this year.

The Role of the Rostrum in Auctions

A rostrum serves as the raised platform where an auctioneer stands to preside over auctions, similar to a podium but with distinct historical connotations. Christie's noted that its first sale using the original rostrum included everyday items like sheets, pillowcases, chamber pots, and irons, contrasting with the high-end art, antiques, and jewellery it is now renowned for selling worldwide.
