In a major philanthropic move, legendary football manager Sir Alex Ferguson has thrown his weight behind a campaign to establish 150 new scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds at Glasgow Caledonian University.
A Landmark Investment in Education
The former Manchester United boss, together with fellow GCU alumnus Dr Murray Rowden, has made a joint pledge of £500,000 to kickstart the initiative. This significant investment was announced as the university celebrates the 150th anniversary of its founding institution, the Glasgow School of Cookery, which was established in 1875.
The campaign officially launched on Monday night at an event hosted by the university's chancellor, Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE, at the Glasgow campus. The gathering brought together business leaders and honorary graduates, including actress Blythe Duff and journalist Sally Magnusson.
Comprehensive Support for Students
The newly created Anniversary Scholarships are designed to offer a holistic support package that goes beyond mere financial aid. Each recipient will receive:
- A financial bursary to cover educational costs
- A travel award to facilitate their studies
- An internship bursary to gain valuable work experience
- Access to a dedicated mentor throughout their degree programme
Sir Alex, who is a founding donor of the GCU Foundation, expressed his deep personal commitment to the cause. "I've witnessed first-hand the life-changing impact that scholarships, travel awards, and mentorship can have on young people," he stated.
Building a Legacy of Opportunity
"Bringing all of this support together in one unique package will give students not only the financial means but the confidence and encouragement they need to truly excel," Ferguson added. "Giving young people a start in life is one of the greatest gifts we can offer, and one that has brought me immense pride and joy over the years."
Dr Rowden, reflecting on his own experience, highlighted the university's transformative role. "Glasgow Caledonian University has played a pivotal role in shaping both my career and my values," he said. "The education I received, and the support I was given, opened doors I never imagined possible."
The university revealed that in the decade since the GCU Foundation's establishment, Sir Alex has helped raise more than £11 million for disadvantaged students. Jill Watt, director of advancement and communications, emphasised that the Anniversary Scholarships will alleviate financial hardship and dismantle social barriers.
"We are profoundly grateful to Sir Alex and Dr Murray Rowden for leading this campaign with such generous support," Watt said. "As we mark 150 years since our founding, this initiative reflects our enduring commitment to access, equality, and inclusion."
